Welcome to The Lucky Colt

In the 2009 NFL season, I had the opportunity to follow the Indianapolis Colts from game one until their devastating Super Bowl loss to the New Orleans Saints. From that defeat, I have been locked in on the Colts and have followed them through the offseason, regular season, and postseason. I love the Indianapolis Colts and my goal is to provide in depth analysis on games, offseason moves, and share my perspective on the team every year.

The Colts Sit Alone on Top of the AFC

The Indianapolis Colts win a nail-biter against the Arizona Cardinals and now, sit all along on top of the AFC.

At 5-1, the Colts are continuing to silence any critics that think this team is a fluke. This Colts team has showed nothing but consistency and the offense has been absolutely phenomenal, led by Daniel Jones. Sunday was a statement win and can be a huge momentum booster for the weeks to come.

The reason why this week was a statement win was due to the fact that the Arizona Cardinals are a struggling team. Often times a hot team, like the Colts, end up losing to a struggling team, like the Cardinals. Towards the end of the game, it looked like this was going to be the case. However, the offense and defense stepped up big to seal it. Here are three takeaways from Sunday’s victory.

Daniel Jones Is Playing Like a Franchise Quarterback

For the sixth straight game, Daniel Jones is playing like a franchise quarterback. At this point, it is safe to say that Jones is and should be the future quarterback for the Colts. On Sunday, he finished 22/30 for 212 yards and two touchdowns. He did throw one bad interception, but his resiliency made up for it. When the team needed him most, Jones continually stepped up, making throw after throw, and executing play after play.

Leading up to this game, Jones was third in the league in passing yards, fifth in QBR, and second in first down rate. Therefore, Jones has been consistent and efficient, which are two of the best qualities that a quarterback can possess. It is because of these two qualities that the Colts are 5-1, sit alone at the top of the AFC South, and sit alone on top of the entire AFC.

The Supporting Cast on Offense is Phenomenal

As well as Daniel Jones being phenomenal in his own right, his supporting cast has been equally great and have tremendously impacted the team’s historic run.

Jonathan Taylor

One of the crucial elements to this Colts offense is the running game and that begins and ends with Jonathan Taylor. On Sunday, Taylor finished with 123 yards on 21 carries, along with the a game-tying touchdown. This performance was the 27th time that Taylor has had a 100-yard game in the NFL. Going into Sunday, he led the NFL in rushing yards with 480 and will, most likely, stay there after his performance in Week 6. Under Shane Steichen’s philosophy, he wants his offense to run to win games and that is what they are doing with Taylor.

Tyler Warren

The Colts have talent all along their receiving core, but there is one guy in particular who has been a star in the making. That star is currently rookie tight end, Tyler Warren. Coming into Week 6, Warren ranked 4th in the league in targets and receptions, while also ranking first in receiving yards. These numbers will continue to climb after Sunday’s victory against the Cardinals. In this contest, he finished with six receptions for 63 yards and one touchdown, all of which led the team.

The Offensive Line

Ultimately, games are won and lost at the line of scrimmage and for the Colts, there offense has been so dominant because of the offensive line. They have been able to run the ball successfully and have given Daniel jones time to throw from a clean pocket. The line is led by left guard, Quenton Nelson, who is on his way to another all-pro caliber season.

The Secondary Is Still a Big Concern

While the Colts have been very good this season, they have also not been a totally complete team. One of their glaring issues has been on defense and it starts with the secondary. On Sunday, the secondary was very thin with Kenny Moore II out for the third straight week, and then Charvarius Ward suffered a concussion during warmups for Sunday’s game. Therefore, they had to rely on a rookie cornerback in Jonathan Edwards who had yet to step on the field.

The culmination of the Colts secondary was that they allowed 320 yards to career backup quarterback, Jacoby Brissett. It was Brissett’s resilience to push the ball down the field that almost upset the Colts. He also had a 7.3 average on pass attempts and converted 9 of 14 third down plays.

Hopefully the secondary will get healthy with Moore and Ward returning soon. However, until that happens, the secondary has issues that could set the Colts back.
