Welcome to The Lucky Colt

In the 2009 NFL season, I had the opportunity to follow the Indianapolis Colts from game one until their devastating Super Bowl loss to the New Orleans Saints. From that defeat, I have been locked in on the Colts and have followed them through the offseason, regular season, and postseason. I love the Indianapolis Colts and my goal is to provide in depth analysis on games, offseason moves, and share my perspective on the team every year.

What We Can Expect from Anthony Richardson in 2023

On Tuesday, August 15th, Colts head coach Shane Steichen announced that the team will start the 2023 season with Anthony Richardson as QB1.

Now, there have been a lot of mixed feelings in regards to Richardson as starting QB. As with many new situations, there will be those with a positive mentality and a negative mentality. Regardless of where you land, the reality is that Anthony Richardson is a rookie and more than likely, he will play like a rookie – he will throw interceptions, make head-scratching plays, miss throws, miss reads, and even be the cause of a loss. On the flip side, though, he will also make some eye-opening plays, explosive plays, throw touchdowns, run for touchdowns, and be the cause of a win.

As mentioned by many scouts and coaches throughout college and the NFL, Richardson possesses an intangible athletic ability that can only be characterized as “a God given ability”. Therefore, the Colts will have plenty to work with in order to make Richardson the quarterback they believe he can be.

With Coach Steichen’s philosophy and game scheme, the passing game will be something in which Richardson may surprise people. We saw glimpses of that against Buffalo where Steichen utilized Richardson in the pass game but he also was given opportunities to create with his legs.

For the Colts organization and its fans, the 2023 season will be full of growing pains, but also hope for the future. According to ESPN’s Mike Clay, the Colts are projected to win 6 games this season, which is not a bad assessment considering everything surrounding this organization. The Colts have one of the youngest rosters in the league and that inexperience is not typically the recipe for success, especially in the playoffs. They also have not solidified their starting running back as Jonathan Taylor has been away from the team.

However, once the Colts get some stability with its starters on offense and defense, (particularly at cornerback) this young team can be destined for something great for many more seasons to come.
